Creatine Monohydrate vs Creapure: What a Name Buys

Creapure is creatine monohydrate. Not a variant of it, not an improved form of it — the same compound, made at a named plant, sold under a trademark.

Which makes the comparison a paperwork question rather than a chemistry question, and paperwork questions are the ones this brand is for.

What is Creapure, and is it different from creatine monohydrate?

It is a brand of creatine monohydrate produced in Germany by a single manufacturer. Chemically it is the same molecule as any other creatine monohydrate, carrying the same roughly 88% creatine by weight. What the trademark identifies is where the raw material was made and to what specification, not what the molecule does.

So a label saying creatine monohydrate and a label saying Creapure creatine monohydrate are describing the same compound. The second one is telling you something extra about its supplier. That is worth having, and it is worth knowing exactly what it is.

What does an ingredient trademark actually guarantee?

A named production site, a consistent process, and a published limit on the by-products creatine synthesis can leave behind — principally creatinine, dicyandiamide and dihydrotriazine. Those limits are the substantive content of the claim. They are a purity specification on the raw material entering the finished product.

Two things follow, and the second one is the one nobody says. First, this is a real quality signal, because impurity limits on an incoming raw material are exactly the sort of thing a buyer cannot check for himself. Second, it is a specification on the ingredient, not a measured result on the jar, and those are different documents with different weights.

Why do most creatine labels not name their raw material?

Because there is no requirement to. A Supplement Facts panel declares the compound and the amount. Naming the upstream supplier is a marketing decision, and a brand paying for a trademarked raw material will almost always make it, because it has paid for the right to.

The useful inference runs the other way. Silence on a label is not evidence of a cheap raw material, and it is not evidence of a good one either. It is an absence, and the honest reading of an absence is that nothing has been established. The category prefers to read it as one thing or the other depending on who is writing.

What does TARE's own label say?

Training Water declares creatine monohydrate at 5,000 mg per 10 g scoop and names no raw-material brand, because our certificate does not name one. We are not going to assert an origin we cannot show a document for, and we are not going to imply one by leaving the question decorative.

The wider limit is worth stating in the same breath. Training Water’s certificate is one of two in our range that report composition and limits and contain no measured result. What the research does not show

No study demonstrates a performance difference between one manufacturer’s creatine monohydrate and another’s. That is not a gap somebody forgot to fill. It is what you would expect when the molecule is identical and the difference is an impurity limit measured in parts per million.

The purity argument is real and it is small. Impurity limits matter, they are a legitimate reason to prefer a named source, and they are not the reason most people buy the trademark. Most people buy it as a proxy for care, which is a reasonable thing to buy and a different thing from what is being sold.

The one comparison that is genuinely decidable is price. Cost per gram of creatine, computed from the serving size on the panel. Everything else in this comparison is a document you either have or do not have.
