One capsule says 750 mg. One scoop says 5,000 mg. Both say creatine on the front, and the smaller one usually costs more per serving.
That is not a paradox and neither label is lying. It is two different compounds carrying two different fractions of the same molecule, and one division separates them.
What is the difference between creatine HCl and creatine monohydrate?
They are the same creatine molecule attached to different partners. Monohydrate is creatine bound to one water molecule. Hydrochloride is creatine bound to hydrochloric acid. The partner changes the compound weight, the solubility and the price. It does not change the creatine.
So the question a shelf actually poses is not which molecule is better. It is how much of each compound is creatine, and that is settled by formula weight rather than by a brand.
How much creatine is in each form?
Divide the creatine portion of the compound by the whole compound. Monohydrate lands at about 88% creatine by weight. Hydrochloride lands at about 78%. Those fractions are fixed by chemistry, they are the ceiling each form can reach, and a finished product usually lands a little under its ceiling.

These are formula-weight fractions — arithmetic on the compound, not results from a laboratory. The last row is the important one: a chelate whose ratio is not printed cannot be divided at all, which is a disclosure problem rather than a chemistry problem.
Run it forward and the comparison stops being a debate. 5,000 mg of monohydrate carries roughly 4,400 mg of creatine. A 750 mg hydrochloride capsule carries roughly 590 mg. Matching the scoop takes about seven and a half of those capsules, which is a fact about volume and about price, and it is available to anyone holding both labels.
Does creatine HCl need a smaller dose?
That is the claim the form is sold on, and it is the part of the comparison to be most careful with. Hydrochloride does dissolve more readily in water. Higher solubility in a glass is a measurable property of the powder. It is not the same thing as a demonstrated smaller effective dose.
The two get merged constantly and they are separate claims. One is about a powder in water and can be shown on a bench. The other is about what a body does with the powder, and it is the one requiring evidence that the category has not produced at the standard the marketing implies.
Which leaves a buyer with a simpler test than the argument suggests: if a hydrochloride product prints a serving that carries less creatine than a monohydrate serving, the smaller-dose claim is doing real work on the price. Ask what is under it.
Which form should someone actually buy?
On the arithmetic alone, monohydrate: it carries the larger fraction, it is the cheapest form per gram of creatine, and it is the form the long research record was built on. Hydrochloride is a legitimate compound with a real solubility advantage, and it is priced as though that advantage were something more.

What the research does not show
The honest version of this comparison is narrower than either side of it usually admits.
There is no ratio. Figures of the form "one part hydrochloride equals four parts monohydrate" circulate widely and none of them come from work that would support a number. Solubility ratios are real and they are the thing being measured; equivalence ratios are the thing being sold.
What holds up is duller. Monohydrate has the longest record and the lowest price per gram of creatine. Hydrochloride dissolves more readily. Beyond that the comparative evidence thins out quickly, and we are not going to argue the strong half of a case using the weak half.
And the thing worth saying plainly: the form argument is a smaller decision than the consistency argument. A form taken four days a week is beaten by any form taken seven.
Running the division on any creatine bottle
Five steps, and they work on ours as well as on everyone else’s.
- Find the compound name and the milligram figure. Not "creatine complex". The compound, and a number.
- Divide by the fraction above. Monohydrate at 88%, hydrochloride at 78%. That is the creatine in the serving.
- Read the serving size, not the headline. A 750 mg figure across a two-capsule serving is a 375 mg capsule.
- Price the creatine, not the tub. Cost per serving divided by grams of creatine per serving is the only comparison that survives across forms.
- Look for a proprietary blend. If creatine sits inside one combined weight, nothing above can be run. That is the answer.
