Nobody times a supplement they have not bought. The timing question only ever gets asked by someone with a tub already open, which makes it the most self-selecting question in sports nutrition and the least consequential.
Here is the short answer, then the longer reason it will not go away.
When is the best time to take creatine?
Whenever it will actually get taken. Total daily intake is what fills muscle creatine stores, and stores are what produce the effect. Timing sits fourth on the list of things that matter, well behind whether it is taken at all, whether it is taken consistently, and roughly how much.
That is not a hedge and it is not humility. It is the finding. A dose taken at a mediocre hour every day beats a well-timed dose taken four days a week, and the gap between those two outcomes is far larger than the gap between morning and evening.
Does creatine work better before or after training?
Slightly after, possibly, and the difference is small enough that it should not organise a day. Research comparing pre-training and post-training dosing exists and some of it leans toward post-training. The effect sizes are modest, the findings are not unanimous, and they shrink further over longer timeframes.
The honest way to hold that: if the scoop is already going into a shaker at some point around training, put it after. If it is not, do not manufacture a ritual to capture an effect this size. There is a real cost to adding a step to a protocol and it is measured in the months a man stays on it.
Should creatine be taken on rest days?
Yes, every day, training or not. This is the one timing rule that is not folklore. Creatine is a store being maintained, not a fuel being burned in a session. Degradation continues at a steady rate whether or not there was training that day, so a skipped rest day is a tank drifting down.
It is also the mistake most likely to be costing someone the effect they are looking for. Four doses a week is not a maintenance dose. It is a slow leak with extra steps.

Does creatine need to be taken on an empty stomach?
No. There is no absorption case for an empty stomach and there is a mild argument against it. Creatine on an empty stomach is one of three ordinary causes of the stomach complaints people attribute to the compound itself, alongside a large single dose and powder that has not fully dissolved.
If a scoop has been sitting badly, take it with food for a week before concluding anything about the ingredient. That fixes it most of the time.
Does it matter what creatine is mixed with?
Water is fine and is what most of the research used. Taking it alongside carbohydrate, or carbohydrate and protein, has been found to improve retention somewhat, probably through the insulin response. Worth knowing, not worth engineering. Taking the scoop near a meal captures most of it without a plan.
Two practical notes that are worth more than the timing debate. Monohydrate dissolves better in warm liquid than cold, and micronized powder disperses faster than a standard grind — grit at the bottom of a bottle is settled creatine, not lost creatine, so swirl it and drink it. And caffeine is almost certainly a non-issue: an old finding raised the possibility of interference, it has not been consistently reproduced, and sports-nutrition consensus does not treat it as a practical concern.
Why the timing question survives at all
Because it is the last variable left.
The molecule is a commodity. The form is settled — monohydrate is what the dosing literature was built on and what nearly everything else gets compared to. The dose converged on a narrow range years ago. Once a category has run out of things to argue about, it argues about timing, because timing is free to talk about and impossible to disprove quickly.
So the aisle fills with windows and protocols and anabolic clocks, and a man who has done everything right ends up wondering whether he has been doing it slightly wrong at 6pm. He has not. The optimisation on offer here is smaller than the effort required to capture it, and a protocol that needs managing is a protocol that gets dropped in a busy month.
What the research does not show
Stated plainly, because the timing literature is regularly oversold in both directions.
It does not show that timing is irrelevant. There are findings that lean post-training and they are not nothing. Anyone claiming timing has been proven not to matter is overstating a null result.
It does not show a window. There is no established period after training inside which creatine behaves differently in a way that changes an outcome. Store saturation is a days-to-weeks process; a thirty-minute window is not a unit that applies to it.
It does not settle the question at the level of an individual. The comparisons that exist are group averages over training blocks. They are the right evidence for a general recommendation and the wrong evidence for a personal one, which is the usual state of affairs and worth saying rather than glossing.
The hierarchy, in order
Most important first. Timing does not appear until the fourth line.
- Whether it is taken at all.
- Whether it is taken consistently, including on rest days.
- Roughly how much — 3 to 5 grams a day, at the upper end for a larger man.
- Everything else, timing included.
Anyone selling the fourth line as though it were the first is selling a schedule, not a supplement.
What that means for how ours is built
