Two bottles. One says 500 mg, one says 2,500 mg, and they can be carrying a similar amount of magnesium.
That is not a trick and it is not an error on either label. It is what happens when a category prints compound weight on the front and elemental weight in the small type, and it is settled by one division that takes four seconds.
What is the difference between magnesium glycinate and magnesium oxide?
They are different compounds carrying different amounts of magnesium by weight. Oxide is roughly 60% magnesium; glycinate is around 14% at most. Oxide therefore prints a bigger number on a smaller capsule. It is also the form with the weakest absorption profile and the most reliable laxative effect at higher doses.
So the two facts point in opposite directions, which is the whole reason this comparison exists. The form that produces the most impressive label is the form least likely to be absorbed.
How much magnesium is actually in each form?
Divide the elemental figure by the compound weight. The result is fixed by chemistry, not by branding, and it can be computed from formula weight for any form. Anything printing a fraction above its form's ceiling is either not what it says it is or is a blend that has not been disclosed as one.

These are formula-weight fractions — arithmetic on the compound, not results from a laboratory. They are the ceiling each form can reach, and a real capsule usually lands under its ceiling because of bound water and excipients. Landing above it is the signal worth catching.
Run it on ours and it lands where it should. Night Work is 275 mg of elemental magnesium from 2,500 mg of magnesium glycinate. 275 ÷ 2,500 is 11%, under the roughly 14% ceiling for a bisglycinate, which is what a real glycinate looks like once it is in a capsule. The compound weight is about nine times the elemental figure. Never ten.
Why does the cheaper form print the bigger number?
Because 60% is a very convenient fraction. A manufacturer using oxide can put a large magnesium figure on a small, cheap capsule and stay entirely truthful about it. Glycinate cannot do that. A lower fraction means the capsule has to be physically bigger, or there have to be more of them, to reach the same elemental dose.
Which is why capsule count is not the liability it looks like. Three capsules is what 275 mg of magnesium from glycinate costs in volume. A one-capsule glycinate at a serious elemental dose is arithmetically difficult, and a one-capsule product claiming one usually resolves into oxide, a blend, or a much smaller number than the front suggests.
Which form should someone actually take?
For a dose taken nightly for a year, the better-tolerated form, which in practice means a chelated one such as glycinate. Oxide is not fraudulent and it has a legitimate use — its laxative effect is the point when constipation is the problem. It is a poor choice for daily mineral intake and a reasonable one for something else entirely.
That is the honest version of a comparison the category usually runs as a morality play. Oxide is not a scam ingredient. It is an ingredient being sold for a job it is bad at, by brands that like what 60% does to a front panel.
What is the ceiling on supplemental magnesium?
There is a published tolerable upper intake level of 350 mg per day for magnesium from supplements specifically. Food magnesium is not subject to it — the kidneys handle dietary magnesium comfortably — but supplemental magnesium is, and that ceiling is lower than a good number of bottles on the shelf.
275 mg sits under it by 75 mg. That headroom is deliberate and it is also the entire margin, so here is our own arithmetic before anyone else runs it. Training Water carries 60 mg of magnesium as magnesium malate per scoop. Run the full AM/PM protocol and the supplemental total is 275 + 60 = 335 mg, fifteen milligrams under the ceiling, with nothing left over for a multivitamin, a greens powder or a second electrolyte product.
And the number that costs us: Night Work's certificate measured magnesium at 96.91 mg per capsule against a specification of greater than 91.6 mg. Our serving is three capsules, so the measured serving is 290.7 mg against the 275 mg the label claims. We claim less than the document found. Using the measured figure, the same full-protocol day totals 350.7 mg — over the limit rather than under it. Both numbers are published on Testing & Certification, and we would rather print the one that costs us than the one that flatters us.
What the research does not show
The absorption argument is the part of this comparison most likely to be overstated, including by people arguing our side of it.
Precise absorption percentages should be treated with suspicion. Figures for oxide and for chelated forms circulate widely and are quoted to the decimal point. The underlying comparisons are small, use different methods and different endpoints, and do not agree with each other closely enough to support a single number. The direction is reasonably consistent; the precision is invented downstream.
What holds up is narrower and duller. Poor solubility means a substantial share of an oxide dose is not absorbed, its most reliable effect at higher doses is gastrointestinal, and chelated forms are generally better tolerated at comparable elemental doses. That is enough to choose a form. It is not enough to quote a ratio.
And magnesium's established physiological roles are the strongest thing about it — normal muscle function, normal nervous-system function, normal energy metabolism.* Those are the honest basis for taking it.
We make no sleep claim for Night Work, and there is not one anywhere on this site. Running the division on any bottle
Six steps, and they work on ours as well as on everyone else's.
- Find the elemental figure. If the panel gives a compound weight with no elemental number, the brand is either careless or counting on the reader not to ask. Either is disqualifying.
- Divide. Elemental ÷ compound weight. Near 60% is oxide, whatever the front of the bottle says. Near 11 to 14% is a glycinate. Above 14% and labelled a pure glycinate, something is wrong.
- Check the serving size. A 500 mg claim spread across three capsules is a 167 mg capsule. Price the daily serving, never the headline.
- Read the form name exactly. "Magnesium glycinate" and "magnesium oxide blended with glycinate" are different products. Buffered blends are legitimate and should be disclosed as blends.
- Add up everything. Multivitamins, electrolyte powders and greens products all carry magnesium quietly. The 350 mg supplemental ceiling applies to the total, not to one bottle.
- Look for a proprietary blend. If magnesium sits inside a blend with one combined weight, nothing above can be calculated. Walk.
The elaboration nobody in the category is running
Every competing magnesium product elaborates by addition. More forms, more actives, more ritual. One brand ships seven forms on the premise that different tissues want different ones, and the quantity of each form is frequently not disclosed, which makes the whole stack uncomputable.
